There are a lot of words, but what do they really mean?<\/h5>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/section><section class=\"bde-section-1888-258 bde-section\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-container\"><div class=\"bde-rich-text-1888-259 bde-rich-text breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p><strong>And what do we need to be particularly aware of in relation to allergies? We\u2019ll give you a quick tour so you\u2019ll be better prepared the next time you\u2019re faced with complicated labels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/section><section class=\"bde-section-1888-374 bde-section\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-container\"><div class=\"bde-div-1888-375 bde-div\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"bde-heading-1888-376 bde-heading\">\nAllergens\n<\/h3><div class=\"bde-rich-text-1888-377 bde-rich-text breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p class=\"p1\">In a nutshell, allergens are substances that can cause allergies \u2013 something we all want to avoid. The word \u2013 and here\u2019s where it can get confusing \u2013 is used as a generic term for a wide variety of substances that can be potentially allergenic in different ways. However, it is most often used to refer to perfumes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/section><section class=\"bde-section-1888-378 bde-section\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-container\"><div class=\"bde-div-1888-379 bde-div\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"bde-heading-1888-380 bde-heading\">\nPreservatives\n<\/h3><div class=\"bde-rich-text-1888-381 bde-rich-text breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p>What are they? Preservatives are used to prevent microbiological growth \u2013 i.e. yeast, scale or bacteria \u2013 in a product, which can be anything from food to detergents, cosmetics and paints. Preservatives are biologically active and can therefore cause allergies, but the extent to which they do so varies widely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/section><section class=\"bde-section-1888-382 bde-section\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-container\"><div class=\"bde-div-1888-383 bde-div\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"bde-heading-1888-384 bde-heading\">\nLAS\n<\/h3><div class=\"bde-rich-text-1888-385 bde-rich-text breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p class=\"p1\">LAS stands for Linear Alkylbenzene Sulphonates and is a synthetic surfactant that reduces surface tension in e.g. washing powders. Due to poor biodegradation, LAS cannot be used in swan-labelled products.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/section><section class=\"bde-section-1888-386 bde-section\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-container\"><div class=\"bde-div-1888-387 bde-div\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"bde-heading-1888-388 bde-heading\">\nOptical white\n<\/h3><div class=\"bde-rich-text-1888-389 bde-rich-text breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p>Optical white is used in laundry powders and is a substance that binds to the textile and makes it appear whiter and clearer. Optical brighteners are bad for the environment and are unnecessary chemicals in relation to asthma and allergies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/section><section class=\"bde-section-1888-390 bde-section\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-container\"><div class=\"bde-div-1888-391 bde-div\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"bde-heading-1888-392 bde-heading\">\nParabens\n<\/h3><div class=\"bde-rich-text-1888-393 bde-rich-text breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p class=\"p1\">Parabens are preservatives that have been used for many years. They are among the preservatives that have the least potential to cause allergies. Parabens have been suspected of being endocrine disruptors and therefore have a very bad reputation, which persists, although there is no longer cause for concern as, for example, methyl and ethyl parabens have been prohibited and the others regulated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/section><section class=\"bde-section-1888-368 bde-section\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section-container\"><div class=\"bde-div-1888-369 bde-div\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"bde-heading-1888-370 bde-heading\">\nPolyethylene\n<\/h3><div class=\"bde-rich-text-1888-371 bde-rich-text breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p>Polyethylene is the most widely used type of plastic, coming in many varieties and for many purposes.
