August 28, 2024

The European Private Label Awards; a competition to determine the most effective and innovative store brands for sale in Europe's supermarkets.

European Private Label Awards (ESM)

The European Private Label Awards, hosted by ESM: European Supermarket Magazine, celebrates outstanding achievements in private label products across Europe. These awards are open to both retailers and suppliers, covering a diverse range of 17 categories, here under Non-Food within Household and Personal Care. Additionally, products are eligible for four prestigious cross-category awards: Innovative Product of the Year, Packaging Excellence Award, Sustainable Product of the Year, and Taste Excellence Award.

The awards are designed to recognize and honor the exceptional quality and innovation found in private label products. This recognition highlights products that not only compete with but often surpass major brands in terms of quality, innovation, and consumer appeal. Winners and finalists receive significant recognition, with their achievements showcased in a special edition of ESM: European Supermarket Magazine, which is published every year in March. This special edition provides a platform for celebrating the advancements and successes in the private label sector, offering inspiration and setting benchmarks for future developments.

Judging Process

The judging process for the European Private Label Awards is rigorous and comprehensive. Each product submitted is evaluated by a panel of experts from various sectors, including retail, food science, and packaging design. The criteria for judging include product innovation, quality, packaging, and overall market appeal. The panel also considers sustainability and consumer trends, ensuring that winning products not only meet current market demands but also anticipate future needs.

During the evaluation process, products are subjected to thorough testing and analysis. This includes sensory evaluations, where judges assess taste, texture, and overall sensory experience for food products. Non-food items are evaluated based on their functionality, design, and consumer usability. The packaging is assessed for its design, practicality, and sustainability, with a focus on reducing environmental impact.

The culmination of this meticulous judging process ensures that only the most outstanding products receive recognition. This not only provides a mark of excellence for the winners but also sets high standards for the industry, encouraging continuous improvement and innovation in private label products.
